Cap'n Dan

Today was a LONG day, but well worth it. We left Tacoma around 8:30 in order to make it up to Anacortes in time for the 11:00 ferry. Turns out it left at 11:50, so we had plenty of time. We took the hour long ferry across to Orcas Island, which is part of the San Juan Islands.

Just after 1:00 we headed out with Cap'n Dan to see if the whales were out playing. Thankfully, they were! Along the way to the whales, we saw almost a dozen bald eagles along the shoreline. It was the first time I had ever heard them 'talking' to each other. So interesting! We soon got to the whales. Scott spent most of the boat ride up top, Des spent all of her time down below with Jaelyn, and I ran back and forth between them. We all got to see whales though, which was a blast.

This is Yoda, K-36.

You can often see the J, K, and L pods in the San Juan area. Today, it was mainly the K pod and they were really spread out. However, it was still fun to see them. There was even a baby whale which was about 4 months old. His/Her spots were orange because it was still a little jaundice. We have given that whale the honorary name of Jaelyn. :)

A few photos of our day:
The smallest life jacket they had was for 30-50 lbs. Jaelyn is barely half that, so we just did a quick photo op and brought her back inside the boat.
